Aquatic microbiota diversity in the culture of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) using bioflocs or periphyton: virulence factors and biofilm formation Animal Sciences
Silva, Jéssica Lucinda Saldanha da; Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Carvalho, Fátima Cristiane Teles de; Vieira, Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Sousa, Oscarina Viana de.
The following research isolated and identified the main bacterial groups present in the culture of juvenile Nile tilapia in the presence of bioflocs and/or periphyton. The strains were also tested for the production of exoenzymes, indicative of potential virulence factors, and ability to form biofilm. The water samples were taken from tilapia cultured in the presence of bioflocs (T1), in the presence of bioflocs and periphyton (T2), from traditional culture (T3) and from culture in the presence of periphyton (T4). In the growth and selection of the bacterial groups, pour plate method was used, along with the following media: Plate Count Agar (PCA - DIFCO), Aero Pseudo Selective Agar (GSP - Himedia) and Nutrient Agar (AN - Merck). 46 strains were isolated...

Effect of estradiol-17β on the sex ratio, growth and survival of juvenile common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) Animal Sciences
Carvalho, Cristina Vaz Avelar de; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Passini, Gabriel; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Costa, Wanessa de Melo; Fundação Instituto de Pesca do Estado do Rio de Janeiro; Vieira, Beatriz Nunes; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Cerqueira, Vinicius Ronzani; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
Sex control in fish is a promising technique for aquaculture, since it gives advantages associated with one sex. The aim of this study was to investigate the feminization of common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) by oral administration of two doses of estradiol-17β (50 and 100 mg E2 kg-1 feed) and control treatment for 45 days and to evaluate their effects on the sex ratio, growth and survival of common snook juveniles. After this period, fish were fed only with commercial feed without hormone supplementation. During the period of E2 administration, the control fish grew more than those in the other treatments. At the end of the experiment in the treatment with 50 mg E2 kg-1, 26.32% of the fish were male, 68.42% were female, and 5.26% were intersex. In the...

The commercial fishing fleet using the middle stretch of the Madeira river, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i3.8119 Biological Sciences
Cardoso, Renato Soares; Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Amazonas; Freitas, Carlos Edwar Carvalho; Universidade Federal do Amazonas.
Fishery resources in the Amazon region are exploited by both industrial and artisanal fishing fleets, that differ in their use of fishing gear and fishing grounds. Data on the physical characteristics of the vessels belonging to the fishing fleets using the Solimões/Amazonas river and estuaries are limited. This article presents an analysis of some physical characteristics of the commercial fishery fleet using the middle stretch of the Madeira river. Data were quantitative collected using interviews of the owners and/or skippers of fishery vessels between January 2003 and May 2004. The boats used for fishing in the region varied in size from 8 to 14 meters and had an average storage capacity ranging from 4.5 to 6.1 tons. Canoes were also used for fishing...

Use of alternative media and different types of recipients in a laboratory culture of Ankistrodesmus gracilis (Reinsch) Korshikov (Chlorophyceae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i3.8046 Biological Sciences
Sipauba-Tavares, Lucia Helena; UNESP; Millan, Rodrigo Ney; UNESP; Berchielli, Flávia de Almeida; UNESP; Braga, Francisco Manoel de Souza; UNESP.
A laboratory culture of Ankistrodesmus gracilis algae was evaluated by studying the biology of the species and its chemical composition in a traditional medium (CHU12) and in two alternative culture media, NPK (20-5-20) and macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) + NPK, in three different types of recipients (fiberglass, carboy and plastic bag). First peak in the growth curve of Ankistrodesmus gracilis occurred on the ninth day in macrophyte + NPK medium (74.16 x 105 cells mL-1) in a fiberglass recipient. However, highest density (p < 0.01) was reported in medium CHU12 (122.87 x 105 cells mL-1) in a plastic bag on the twelfth day. Cell density was over 70 x 105 cells mL-1 starting on the twelfth day. Growth rate of A. gracilis was similar (p > 0.05) in...
